It occurred to me many years ago that similarities or connections among disparate living things - tree branches and human body parts, for example - were not coincidences or metaphors. The similarities are real and fundamental.

Seeing similarities and connections in the world of living things evolved during my commercial photography career of photographing musicians and actors, work which involved carefully looking at people. After moving on from commercial work, I found myself drawn to photographing flowers, trees, and other living things the same way I photographed people. That is to say, by seeing the same intrinsic qualities in all living things, I began making pictures of their samenesses.

I believe that the source of the connections among living things is Time, that the connections go back to the origin of life, possibly to the beginning of all that we know and see. Through this work, I have come to understand that the world in which we live offers glimpses of the past and the future in the present. Seeing Time in all living things is an endlessly fascinating way of seeing the everyday world. It is a way of seeing beyond - or beneath - the complications that ensnare our daily thoughts and emotions. It is a way of seeing to the fundamental life of which we are all a part. Time is the thread that connects all of the photographs on this website.
